Talk to LLM-powered chatbots about research!

Gradschool.chat is an LLM powered chatbot system that lets you explore research fit with a number of different professors in human-computer interaction. We envision it being helpful to grad school applicants, but may also help other interested users. This assistant is a research project at Emory University.

So these are AI-powered assistants? Not professors themselves?

Yes, that is correct. These chatbots are a collection of assistants powered by large-language models, and have been trained with information related to the research of professors who participate in the program. You will not be talking to professors, but interacting with an AI assistant.

Why might talking to a LLM based assistant be useful?

While talking to an assistant is not a substitute for talking to professors themselves, it can help you brainstorm your research interests and see how they align with participating professors. It can also help you understand research in a form that is more interactive than reading papers. Our assistant is not perfect, but users report that about two-thirds of its responses are useful.
Please note that your conversations are not shared with the professors that are participating in this research, nor are they shared with university admissions offices, etc.

Did you ask the professors for permission?

All professors explicitly gave permission. Assistants are only created when professors explicitly give us permission.
